Description: One day in the life of a worker Through the reconstruction of a day in the life of the Piretti family of Bologna, the film draws a very critical picture, from a Leftist perspective, of the living conditions of workers. The film is opened and closed by footage and photographs of demonstrations and clashes with police, a speech by Palmiro Togliatti in Piazza Maggiore and a protest march along Via Indipendenza. The Piretti family is composed of father, mother, one son and one daughter of working age, and one son of school-going age. After waking up and having breakfast, all the males of the house get into a FIAT 500 car, while the daughter stays at home to work; she assembles small objects for little pay, without any sort of social security. The youngest son is dropped off in front of the school. The father, a commuting bricklayer, is left at the railway station. The other son continues on to the factory where he works. In front of the factory gates, a page from “L’Unità” newspaper denouncing the actions of AMF-SASIB, a company at the forefront in the ostracism of left-wing union representatives. After having followed the father at work on a construction site (the voiceover tells us that he has built a city in his lifetime, but doesn’t have a house of his own) and the son at work on the factory floor, we return to the Piretti house in the evening. After dinner, the father watches “one-sided governmental” television. As we follow the activities of the Piretti family, the voiceover makes a series of criticisms concerning the system of work in Italy: the effort involved in commuting, the lack of safety in the workplace and consequently the high level of work-related accidents, the low wages, the failure to renew the workers statute, immigration, female unemployment levels, pension problems, etc. Asserting, in conclusion, the need for a class struggle. This film is the property of the Emilia-Romagna Gramsci Foundation.
